In the not-too-distant future, the globalized world, which has become increasingly complex, frightening and confusing for many, is transformedinto a simpler, clearly arranged place in which small city-states emerge, each of them home to not more than a few million people. Societies remake themselves, containing their people, knowledge and technology within well-guarded borders.

One of these places is the domain.state called Libertyville@Esperantia in the south of what was once the United States of America. Life is great there, the weather‘s fine, everyone has the latest technology and everything runs in accordance with rules and laws based on values reflecting the spirit of the Almighty. But, even when things appear to be simpler at first glance, they can be more complicated than anyone thinks - and if more and more characters and their stories intersect in various places and times, it‘s possible that a higher authority may become necessary to close the circle in the end...

The text and prose in this collection dates back as far as the early 1980s. Some are coolly-distant observations which could form the lyrical basis for a song while others stand alone, radiating individuality and a deeply personal character. In the sum, they paint a picture in which the intensity and the gravity forming the nucleus of the early first-person narrations is deconstructed, like pinpoints of light within the constellation of a much larger scheme of things.

While the first-person significance seems to diminish with this perspective, the order inherent within this bigger picture benefits directly from the structure provided by each individual observation.

Gibt es sowas wie ein Recht auf Glück? Ist es vielleicht manchmal von Oben bestimmt? Oder muss es immer tagtäglich hart erkämpft werden? Lena, eine junge Frau aus Berlin, erarbeitet sich im Süden Europas kochend ihrer Unabhängigkeit – glücklich darüber, die Eltern sowie deren starres Dasein, weit hinter sich gelassen zu haben. Eines Tages kreuzt sich jedoch ihr Weg mit dem von Abdelkarim, ein junger Jordanier, dessen Interesse an das Wettergeschehen am Himmel eine Loslösung von den traditionellen Werten und Denkmustern seiner Familie in Gang gesetzt hat. Bei dieser Begegnung stehen sich Lenas Streben nach Unabhängigkeit und der Wunsch Abdelkarims nach Struktur, nur des Vernunfts wegens, unverhofft gegenüber.

Während sie bemüht ist, eine Existenz aufzubauen, die bewußt wenig mit den elterlichen Strukturen gemeinsam hat, bleibt der junge Mann einem Onkel, der ihm das Leben in Europa ermöglicht, eng verbunden. Dem alten Mann zuliebe nutzt er seine Freiheit, um nach einer inneren Ordnung zu suchen, die das Gegenteil seiner bislang gelebten Vergangenheit ist.

Die Impressionen und Erinnerungen, die Lena in Andalusien beschäftigen, werden immer wieder kulinarisch umrahmt. Man versteht fast beiläufig, dass man das ist, was man isst. Und Abdelkarim, der sich anfangs der Vorstellung widersetzten musste, das Himmelsgeschehen sei von Gott gelenkt, muss erfahren, dass seine Wissenschaft – die Meteorologie – auch im rational denkenden Deutschland plötzlich im krassen Widerspruch zur Plausibilität stehen kann…

Vivienne’s world is a glimpse back into a cherished vision, that of a sheltered America which hovers in the back of our consciousness to this day. Why Vivienne Walked is a quietly narrated story, starting in the early 1950s, following a smart, young Midwestern girl, tracing her path through two decades and three marriages up to the day in 1973 on which Richard Nixon leaves the oval office. It’s an insular, seemingly intact world in which she grows up, a time and place in which everyone is content but in which no one risks much in the pursuit of true happiness.

A place in which ingrained values sometimes become fences, closing off avenues to the future instead of serving as markers to guide one through life and the wider world beyond the horizon. Some of the characters possess wisdom, others possess a bit of courage. But the flow of life all around Vivienne is dictated by an ardent desire that things remain as they are – and those occasions when wisdom or courage is required are exactly the situations which threaten to rock the boat or to tip the status quo entirely. Sometimes it’s not enough to just be content, satisfied to simply occupy a comfortable spot in the overall order of things. From an early age onward, Vivienne sensed this longing for the world beyond Corrigan County. She knew that she wanted more: she wanted to be truly happy…
